Thinking about a career change, but not sure where your experience fits? If you enjoy working with people, solving problems, and making a real difference, you might be surprised to learn that your background has already prepared you for a rewarding career in professional home care.
We sat down with one of our visiting carers Alona, who successfully made the transition into care after years working as a teacher. She shared what it was like to move sectors, how her existing skills prepared her, and why changing career paths was the best decision she ever made.
Life Experience Is Care Experience
When people consider joining the care sector, the biggest hesitation is almost always the same: “I don’t have a background in health or social care.”
The truth is that high-quality home care isn’t just about clinical tasks. At its heart, care is about empathy, respect, active listening, reliability, and human connection. Whether your background is in customer service, retail, office administration, hospitality, management, or education, the daily skills you have built throughout your working life are precisely what makes a great carer.
As Alona explains, moving into care isn’t about starting from scratch, it’s about bringing your values and skills to a new setting:
“If you have ever worked with people, you already know the most important thing. You are used to giving your whole heart, to trying to understand people’s needs, to finding the right approach for that person. The core of what we do never changes.”
How Transferable Skills Come to Life in Care Work
High Emotional Intelligence & Active Listening
In almost every line of work, reading between the lines and understanding people is key. In care, that same emotional awareness helps you notice what a client truly needs in the moment.
Alona shares: “My ability to read between the lines has been invaluable. I have strong emotional intelligence: I know when someone needs practical advice, and when they simply want to be listened to.”
Building Trust with Families
Whether you are used to managing client accounts, looking after customers, or keeping parents updated, clear and reassuring communication builds trust. Families turn to professional carers during important life transitions, relying on them to keep their loved ones safe and comfortable.
“There is one thing that unites my past role and my work now: back then, people trusted me with the most precious thing they had, educating their children. Now, families trust me with what is dearest to them – their mothers, fathers, grandparents. This is the highest trust anyone can give, and I treat it with the utmost care.”
Respecting Every Client as a Unique Individual
No matter what sector you come from, treating people as individuals with unique preferences is key to building genuine rapport. In home care, taking time to learn those little details, right down to how someone takes their tea, is where true connection happens.
“I come to a person who has a whole lifetime of stories. I approach every interaction with deep respect, and it brings me so much joy to learn more about them, little by little, with every visit… Everyone has their own habits, their own way of seeing things, even how they like their cup of tea is completely unique.”
What If I Feel Nervous About Changing Career?
Stepping into a new sector can feel like a big step, even if you are an experienced professional. It is completely natural to feel apprehensive about whether you will feel confident and supported.
When Alona first joined us after leaving her previous career behind during an extraordinarily difficult time in her life, she had those exact same worries:
“I thought that after everything I had been through, leaving the war in Ukraine with a young family, nothing new could ever scare me again. Yet starting this work felt incredibly worrying. Why? Because I understood: one day, very soon, I would be sitting alone with someone in their home, holding a huge responsibility. But the support, training and shadowing I received from Ashridge really helped to put my mind at ease.”
You Are Never Alone in the Field
The key to a successful career change is joining a care team that prioritises thorough, compassionate training and ongoing office support so you never feel isolated:
“I was nervous, but I am the kind of person who asks every question I have. Every single question I asked, even the ones I worried might sound silly, was answered with patience and full respect. The training was thorough, wonderful, and deeply useful… Even now, if I have questions, the team in the office always treat me with such kindness and give me all the support I need.”
Finding a Job with Real Connection
For many professionals swapping traditional corporate, retail, or office roles for home care, the primary motivation is replacing abstract targets with real human impact.
“The energy you give comes back to you a thousand times over… Nothing compares to this, no office work, no numbers on a screen can ever replace it. After a very busy day, I come home physically tired, but my heart feels light and that is such a wonderful feeling.”
Building trust with a new client often comes down to simple, genuine human connection. Alona shared a story from her early days that illustrates how listening and care helps build rapport:
“I went for an evening visit to see a lady, and part of my role was to prepare her breakfast for the next morning. She had a very specific routine, an exact recipe, precise amounts, even the bananas had to be cut in a specific way.
When she saw me for the first time, she looked so disappointed; she just didn’t want to explain everything all over again to a stranger. I walked with her to the kitchen, followed every step carefully, and kept things light. At the end, she smiled and said: ‘You passed the test – I want you to come and see me.’ Now we are the best of friends.”
