Life as an Ashridge live-in carer: trust, support, and rewarding work

Headshot of Debbie, Live-in care manager.

In our latest team spotlight, we sit down with Debbie Linstead, Live-in Care Manager to discuss how we support our incredible live-in carers, our approach to client and carer matching, and the rewards of choosing a career in care.

What kind of support can an Ashridge live-in carer expect when they start a new placement?

I aim to develop a trusting relationship with my carers. I want them to feel comfortable getting in touch with me about anything, knowing that I will always take the time to listen and respond as quickly as possible.

When a carer begins a new placement, someone will always be there for the initial introduction, whether that is myself, or an experienced carer. I then usually visit within the first 48 hours to see how they are settling in and identify any additional support they might need. This could range from managing shopping arrangements to organising an occupational therapy (OT) assessment.

Once the routine is established, I carry out regular spot checks and supervisions, as well as arranging annual appraisals. I also ensure that carers remain competent and confident in key areas such as medication administration and moving and handling. Ultimately, I am always there as a bridge; supporting our carers and liaising with the client or their family to address any concerns.

Ashridge takes the time to match a carer and client; what does a ‘perfect match’ look like in practice? Do you have a favourite success story?

One of the most rewarding aspects of my role is seeing the perfect match between a carer and a client. It’s incredibly fulfilling when everything falls into place and everyone is happy – and I’ve been fortunate to witness this several times.

A great example is a lovely lady living with Parkinson’s disease who had previously received visiting care from us. After a fall and subsequent hip replacement, she wanted to return home but needed respite live-in care to do so. Initially, she was very anxious about having a stranger living in her home, even worrying about unexpected visits from the carer’s own friends or family.

I put her mind at ease by reassuring her that this would never happen, and we carefully matched her with a carer who was gentle, tactful, discreet, and highly experienced in Parkinson’s support. They hit it off immediately. Knowing someone was always there gave her immense comfort. While her health condition remains, she has maintained as much independence as possible and has developed a wonderful rapport with her two main carers. What started as temporary respite care has since beautifully transitioned into ongoing, long-term support.

As someone who started as a live-in carer, what advice would you give to someone considering this career journey?

Before moving into management, I actually worked as a live-in carer myself for six years. My own journey started when I returned to England after living abroad for 33 years with little more than a suitcase. I was initially looking for work as a nanny or housekeeper when a friend suggested live-in care. I decided to give it a try, and it completely changed my life.

By working extended placements with minimal overheads and food provided, I watched my savings grow quickly – eventually allowing me to buy my own home, which wouldn’t have been possible otherwise. Beyond the financial benefits, and most importantly, it was incredibly fulfilling. I thoroughly enjoyed meeting a wide variety of fascinating people, each bringing a wealth of wisdom and life experience. Knowing I was helping them remain safe and comfortable in their own homes was deeply rewarding. In fact, even though my main client has since passed away, their family still keeps in touch with me four years later.

My advice to anyone considering this path is to go for it. While the role requires real dedication, it truly makes a difference in people’s lives and can, in turn, change your own.

That first hand experience is exactly why, at Ashridge Home Care, we don’t simply recruit carers and drop them into placements. We guide you through a robust recruitment process and a comprehensive induction programme at our head office.  By taking the time to truly understand your experience, personality, and preferences, we can match you with a client.  This matching process helps you to succeed and thrive in your role, because when you feel supported, our clients receive the outstanding care they deserve.
