What is a live-in care trial?

Choosing the appropriate care for a loved one can be a daunting prospect. They may need more support than you can provide, but may feel anxious at the thought of living in a residential care home.

If you are unsure if live-in care is for you, it’s possible to try it out and see.  Whether you or your loved one has deteriorated in health or is awaiting hospital discharge, a short period of live-in care could be a very good option.

Clients who come to Ashridge sometimes express uncertainty as to whether live-in care will be the best option. Our live-in care trial enables families to try our service and decide if it is the best fit – without a long-term commitment.

What are the benefits of trialling live-in care?

Making the right decisions for your loved one can be a very challenging situation to find yourself in – particularly deciding which care option to choose from. In fact, around 60% of family members we speak to find themselves rushed into making care decisions. However, trialling live-in care is a superb option to guarantee the right choice.

Some of the benefits include:

  1. Personalised Assessment: A trial period allows for a comprehensive evaluation of the individual’s needs and allows caregivers to tailor their support accordingly. From specialist care and complex care to personal care and rehabilitation, everything is personalised.
  2. Familiarity and Comfort: During the trial, the individual can experience the benefits of receiving care in the comfort of their home – promoting a sense of security and enhancing overall well-being.
  3. Continuous Support: With live-in care, the individual receives round-the-clock assistance, ensuring immediate support during emergencies or challenging situations.
  4. Companionship: A trial allows for the establishment of companionship and trust, offering emotional support and reducing feelings of loneliness or isolation.
  5. Flexibility and Adaptability: During the trial, the caregiver can adjust the level and type of support based on the individual’s changing needs.
  6. Family Support: It allows family members to observe and assess the benefits of professional care, while having the peace of mind that their loved one is well-supported.

Get all the information you need

To arrange a live-in care trial for your loved one, call our care team on 01494 917 344 or email care@ashridgehomecare.co.uk. Our team will be delighted to discuss your loved one’s needs and desires, as well as your preference for the trial duration. Our team will guide you through the assessment process and any consultations that are required to develop a personalised care plan for the trial period.

We can match you with a live-in carer for a minimum of two weeks, to allow you the breathing space you need to make your longer-term care decisions. And if you are happy with the care received, there is the option to extend this period.

The trial period gives you time to assess what is best for you or your loved one – be it to remain in the familiarity of their own home or to look at other options.

A care manager will then visit the home to complete an assessment, with absolutely no obligation. We will then prepare a suggested care plan that takes not only the individual’s needs and wishes into consideration, but also those of the family, as well as your chosen health professionals.

Live-in care is a long-established but relatively unknown, growing alternative to residential and nursing care, which substantially extends the care choice available to the individual. It allows someone with high levels of need to remain in their own home and community and lead a good quality life in familiar surroundings.

According to Dr Glen Mason, “I expect live-in care to continue to grow in popularity and to become the high-quality first care choice of many people.”

Knowing that you require care or that your loved one requires care can be very difficult. But knowing there is an option for care that doesn’t involve the upheaval and distress associated with moving to a care home is a blessing for many families. Live-in care can be a better option for later-life care and can be highly affordable too.

But most importantly, for families, trialling live-in care can bring peace of mind knowing that their loved one is receiving dedicated care and companionship in a familiar environment.

It alleviates the burden of caregiving from family members, allowing them to maintain a healthy work-life balance and reducing stress. Family members can also enjoy quality time with their loved ones without the added responsibilities of caregiving tasks.
