Supporting older loved ones during the heatwave

An older gentleman sat indoors on the sofa speaking with a carer. Both are staying hydrated with a drink.
With temperatures across southern England expected to reach 36–38°C this week, the heat can pose serious health risks for older people and those living with long-term health conditions.

8 tips for caring for the elderly during a heatwave

If you’re caring for an elderly parent, spouse, relative or friend, a few simple precautions can help keep them safe and comfortable during the hottest days.
  1. Encourage regular hydration with cold drinks throughout the day, even if they don’t feel thirsty
  2. Choose foods with a high water content, such as fruit, salads and vegetables, to help stay hydrated
  3. Apply sunscreen and ensure appropriate sun protection if spending time outdoors
  4. Keep homes as cool as possible by closing curtains, blinds and windows during the hottest parts of the day
  5. Open windows during cooler evening and overnight hours, where safe to do so
  6. Head outdoors during the cooler parts of the day, such as early morning or later evening
  7. Watch for signs of heat exhaustion, confusion, dizziness, headaches or unusual tiredness, and seek medical advice promptly if concerns arise
  8. Family carers, don’t forget to look after yourselves too.

If you know an older neighbour, friend or relative who lives alone, take a few moments to check in on them during the heatwave. A phone call, message or visit could make all the difference.
