How to turn compassion into a career in care

For many, the path to becoming a professional carer begins long before they apply. Often, it starts at home, rooted in the quiet, everyday moments of supporting a loved one.

We caught up with visiting carer Anjali to talk about life at Ashridge, career paths in care, and why it’s more than just a job.

From family support to a career in care

Many people get into care because they have already looked after a relative. That personal experience gives them a real, practical understanding of what it means to support someone at home.

“I cared for my mother-in-law whilst she was terminally ill, and I am currently supporting my father-in-law, who is disabled,” our carer Anjali shares. “I also spent a lot of time with my grandparents when I was younger.  Spending time with them and supporting them in their day-to-day routine was something I really enjoyed. It gave me great satisfaction knowing I could contribute to bettering their quality of life. This is what truly encouraged me to pursue work as a professional carer.”

If you have ever looked after a family member, you already have the key qualities we look for, like patience, empathy, and a genuine desire to help.

Choosing Ashridge: finding the right workplace culture

Deciding where to take that next professional step is incredibly important. For our carer, a recommendation from a friend and a quick look at the website made all the difference.

“I had heard from a friend that she knew someone who worked for Ashridge Home Care.  They were really enjoying it, so I thought I should look into it. Having looked up the website, I felt that this job, and the compassionate, supportive environment here, would really suit me and allow me to have a positive impact.”

A supportive team environment

Stepping into a new role can sometimes feel daunting, but the right team makes all the difference. At Ashridge, we pride ourselves on creating a community where no one ever feels isolated.

“Ashridge Home Care is a family. I have always found all the staff incredibly approachable, kind, and always helpful to both established staff and new carers. The training is exceptional.  They put a real emphasis on making sure you feel completely comfortable with your responsibilities.”

Continuous learning is at the heart of what we do.  We ensure our carers feel confident every time they walk through a client’s door.

“The training given is the best I have experienced, very informative and helpful when you start working. There are lots of opportunities for development.  I have never felt worried about asking questions to make sure I am able to do the job to the best of my ability.”

Making a positive impact

While things like flexible hours and good training are important, many carers find that the most satisfying part of the job is simply building relationships with clients and knowing they’ve made their day a bit easier.  When asked about their proudest moment so far, our carer didn’t hesitate:

“My proudest moment was when my client’s family emailed the office to say their mum is looked after so well and is becoming more independent and confident. I have built such a great relationship with these clients, so much so that they tell me they miss me when I don’t visit! It is incredibly satisfying to know that I can have a positive impact on their day and help make their lives a little easier.”

Is this your next step?

If you are reading this and wondering whether a career in care is right for you, our carer has some simple advice:

“To someone who is applying to be a carer, I think it is important to really enjoy spending time with elderly people. If you are compassionate and willing to go the extra mile to take care of their needs, being a carer at Ashridge is the perfect job for you.”

You don’t need a background full of professional care qualifications to start, sometimes, the best qualification is simply a caring heart and a willingness to learn.
