At Ashridge Home Care, supporting individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia is more than just a key part of our service, it is a cause close to our hearts. Many of our clients navigate the daily reality of supporting someone living with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia.  We are deeply passionate about providing care that prioritises independence, dignity, and joy.

This World Alzheimer’s Day, we wanted to introduce Lina Pazou, our Head of Operations, Registered Manager, and resident Dementia Specialist.

Lina brings a wealth of clinical expertise to our team. As a Registered Nurse holding an MSc in Dementia Care, her background allows her to guide our care teams in delivering evidence-based, compassionate, and deeply person-centred support. Lina is dedicated to changing the narrative surrounding dementia care, focusing not on what is lost, but on helping individuals live rich, fulfilling lives in the comfort of their own homes.

Below, Lina shares her expert reflections on how tailored home care can empower people living with dementia to keep the life they love.

Living well at home: how the right care helps people keep the life they love

For many people, home is far more than a place to live. It is where memories are held, relationships are nurtured, and daily habits give shape, comfort, and meaning. This is especially true when someone is living with dementia or needs additional support due to age or changing health needs. Remaining in familiar surroundings helps a person stay connected to their identity, surrounded by the sights, routines, possessions, neighbours, pets, and loved ones that bring a sense of security.

The reflections in Slow Puncture, a book by Peter Berry, who was diagnosed with young-onset Alzheimer’s-related dementia, remind us that living well is not only about managing a condition. It is about preserving identity, purpose, dignity, and choice. Peter Berry’s story demonstrates that people can continue to lead active, meaningful lives when supported to focus on what matters to them. His relationships, passion for cycling, and commitment to raising awareness all became central to how he continued to live positively.

Why staying at home makes all the difference in Alzheimer’s care

At Ashridge Home Care, we believe that high-quality dementia care should help people remain safely and comfortably in the place they cherish most. Staying at home allows individuals to retain control over the small, daily choices that make life personal:

  • Choosing when to get up and what to eat
  • Sitting in a favourite chair or tending to the garden
  • Listening to cherished music or spending time with a beloved pet
  • Staying active in the local community or attending faith groups

These everyday routines offer deep reassurance. A familiar environment reduces anxiety, builds confidence, and fosters emotional stability. Just as importantly, remaining at home protects existing relationships. Good care should strengthen these social and community connections, never replace them.

Personalised, person-centred home care

Personalised care begins with listening. We take the time to understand each person’s unique life story, preferences, daily routines, and health goals. This allows us to deliver support that feels natural rather than intrusive.

For one person, this might mean gentle encouragement to continue a favourite hobby. Or for another it might involve assistance with meals, medication management, personal care, or mobility support. For someone living with dementia, it means helping them feel safe and understood in a world that can sometimes feel confusing.

Our carers are trained with empathy, patience, and expert skill. A well-matched carer becomes a trusted companion, offering reassurance, conversation, and encouragement while respecting independence. This relationship-centred approach ensures individuals are seen as people first, not defined by a diagnosis.

Supporting independence and meaningful moments

Living well at home means finding ways to continue doing what brings joy. Whether it’s preparing a familiar recipe, walking through the local neighbourhood, looking at family photographs, or enjoying a cup of tea in a favourite spot, these moments ground us.

Our carers empower clients to do as much as they can for themselves, stepping in only where support is needed. This balance protects confidence and dignity while giving families complete peace of mind.

Reassurance and support for families

When a loved one requires care, families often carry significant worry and emotional weight. Professional home care provides practical help and peace of mind. Whether through visiting care or dedicated live-in care, having professional support makes daily life manageable and far less stressful.
