Are some live-in carers being paid unfairly?

In the first week of April, a recent survey conducted by the care staffing app Florence revealed that around 5% of social care and NHS agency staff were presented with pay rates falling below the newly increased minimum wage of £11.44 per hour, effective April 1st. 

Despite the mandated raise, staff reported offers as low as £9 and £9.50 per hour, with the median unlawful wage quoted by unscrupulous agencies standing at £10 per hour. Alarmingly, nearly half of those offered substandard wages were presented with rates exceeding last year’s living wage of £10.42 per hour, hinting at a potential exploitation of legal changes. 

Notably, 80% of affected individuals hold positions as care assistants and 71% had three years or less of experience, highlighting the heightened vulnerability of less experienced staff to inadequate treatment by agencies.
