At Ashridge we take pride in helping our clients with dementia to live fulfilling and happy lives, actively encouraging and supporting them to continue with their interests and pastimes. A great example of this is Jill, an 82 year old lady with dementia and her live-in carer, Anca.
Anca has been living with Jill since December 2020 and in just a few months they have forged a close bond. Anca has helped to transform Jill’s life and in doing so significantly improved her mental and physical wellbeing.
Jill used to be a very talented artist but gave up her painting as her dementia advanced. Through open communication, patience and understanding Anca has taken time to discover Jill’s past interests and passions and encouraged Jill to re-engage in them. Anca asked Jill if she could use some of her paints and canvases to try her hand at painting and if Jill could teach her some of her skills. Jill was delighted to help and they now paint together regularly and Jill has inspired and supported Anca to create some beautiful works of art!
We spend a great deal of time getting to know the person in our care – what makes them tick, what their interests are, and how they like things to be.
And it’s not only through art that Anca has made a difference. Anca realised that Jill was a lady who had always been smartly dressed and taken care of her appearance, so every day she now does Jill’s hair and make-up for her, styles her clothes and picks out matching jewellery. This has made a big difference to Jill’s confidence and self-esteem and when they go on their daily walk Jill enjoys seeing (at a distance!) her friends from the village who always compliment her on how well she is looking.
Jill’s daughter, Lynn believes that Anca has had a remarkable impact on her mum’s life
“Anca is very loving towards mum and handles her in a nice way, she isn’t patronising at all and they get through everything with humour and fun. It’s lovely to see mum so happy and enjoying the things that she always used to love once again.”
At Ashridge Home Care we only employ our own carers. We understand how important continuity of care is, so we make sure you have a small, dedicated team working with your loved one. Our carers are fully trained in dementia care, and we encourage the use of many specialist methods and techniques to help keep your loved one content and engaged.
There’s overwhelming evidence that staying at home with one to one care and attention can have a profound effect on health and wellbeing. Ashridge Home Care was borne out of the genuine need for additional care services to be provided to people in their own homes – where they feel most comfortable and at ease.
